Can you tell the difference between a counterfeit bag and the real thing?

Here in Australia the police crack down on counterfeit goods. They are scouring city markets for stalls selling bags and clothes with big expensive brand names that were made in China but are being passed off as the real thing.

Unfortunately for them, the real things ARE made in China and it has been proven to be.

A lot of big bag and clothing companies get their goods made incredibly cheaply in China and then they are sent off to Italy or France, have a handle, strap or some doohickie attached and then the "made in Italy" label can be added.

Except the article was not made in Italy!

Sure, some bag companies may make their own, but there's very few.

And we've all seen the Chinese sweatshops where workers are supposedly chained to their tables while they churn out bag after bag or top after top.

While I do not own a counterfeit as most big label brands do not impress me, I can see why so many buy fakes. Because the "real" prices are just too fucking expensive for a Chinese made article.

Unfortunately, here in Australia, if you are caught selling or buying counterfeit, you get fined and can go to jail. Just for buying a bag that has a metal tag claiming to be something it's not. Bullshit if you ask me.

Clearly designers need to pull their head out of their arse and stop relying solely on women who have money, women who have their man's money, and women who go into debt to own their goods, because the majority CANNOT afford that amount of money for something made in China. It's like jewellery designers who get their stuff made in China and then whack on astronomical prices for something that a chain store can sell at a miniscule amount of the price.

Designers and brands need to get real, as long as you get your stuff made in China, they are going to knock you off and sell you elsewhere, that's why China is opening stores selling knock off Apple stuff. Because they make it!

  1. so true. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the real thing and the copy cat. But I'm thinking maybe the weight might be different and the lifespan maybe? I have no idea.

  2. I know you can tell with the stitching, metal tags and labels, but I doubt most people would care.
